It will probably also be worth checking out Harris and Hoole if you live in the outskirts of London. http://www.harrisandhoole.co.uk/
If I’ve missed you out, please add in a comment or tweet me at @philwbass
Phil, you are a hero!
Bless you, Phil, for compiling this survivor’s guide to the last week of 2012. Merry Merry!
Only the finish left a faintly bitter note: Harris & Houle is hardly an indie.
Thanks Daniel. It took a while but several people asked for it. I know what you’re saying about Harris and Hoole but many, many ‘Indies’ have financial backing from who know’s where… one of the less discussed aspects of the independent scene – the difference with H and H is that it is public knowledge who their funders are – much as I despise Tesco I don’t know what dodgy dealers are involved with the others. And I do know Harris and Hoole are committed to direct trade.
harris and hoole are committed to direct trade, but perhaps the point is that tesco aren’t, so shouldn’t be supported. personally i think h & h are going to be super dominant on the high street.
Yeah, I am torn though… For three reasons, firstly by a large corporation (however ethically dodgy) backing a company using direct trade that then makes a bigger market for direct trade farmers; secondly it raises awareness of consumers of direct trade and thirdly (significantly for me), very many of the independent coffeeshops have significant financial backing from inverstors. How do we know that the bankers of some of our favourite cafes are not even more ethically dubious…I guess we don’t.
