One of my favourite trios is playing at the Vortex in Dalston on Tuesday February 4th. Stephan is known best as the bassist in Vijay Iyer’s groundbreaking and original trio but plays regularly in his wife Jen Chapin’s trio. Stephan appears at the Vortex with his own Rosetta trio featuring the unique line up of upright bass, acoustic guitar and electric guitar.

The trio have a very special sound and interplay that ranges from tender chamber-like closeness to deep grooving. They are not afraid of the abstract and the ‘thwirl’ of intensity but often also hit on a soulful melody and bluesy groove. Guitarists Liberty Ellman and Jamie Fox have played together with Crump in the trio since 2005. Their new album Thwirl is highly recommended.
